Our national chapter, Kappa Alpha Order, was founded in Lexington, Virginia in the year 1865 by founding fathers James Ward Wood, William Nelson Scott, William Archibald Walsh, and Stanhope McClelland Scott. Samuel Zenas Ammen, often credited with transforming the KA “Lodge” into the Order of national prominence that it remains today, is known as the chapters Practical Founder. Currently, Kappa Alpha boats 130+ undergraduate chapters and over 70 alumni chapters across the country.
The Gamma Rho Chapter was founded at East Carolina University in 1958 and remains today as the longest tenured fraternity chapter on all East Carolina’s campus. Dr. Ovid Williams Pierce, an alumnus of the KA Alpha Phi Chapter at Duke University, was instrumental in the chapters founding. Pierce, who joined the East Carolina staff as a professor of English in 1956, served as the chapter’s advisor for 30 years. Pierce, known by man as “Doc,” is one of the most decorated staff members in ECU and North Carolina history. Doc received the Sir Walter Raleigh Award in 1953 and 1960, the NC Literature Award in 1969, and the O. Max Gardner Award in 1973, awarded once a year across the entire UNC System. Lastly, in 1976, Ovid Williams Pierce received Kappa Alpha Order’s Highest honor, its Award for Distinguished Achievement. Dr. Pierce is one of 20 men to receive this award in the history of Kappa Alpha.
Since its founding in 1958, many alumni have significantly contributed to the success of The Order. Our history of brotherhood and alumni at East Carolina sets us apart from any other fraternity on campus and serves as the foundation that will propel us into the future. Among our most influential alumni, Max Ray Joyner has served on countless boards and commissions in Greenville and beyond and continues to be one of the most prominent voices for ECU students in the Greenville community. Bill Johnson has dedicated many years as an advisor to The Order as well, and more brothers continue to contribute their time and finances to our ongoing projects, fundraising efforts, and overall mission.
